Android 5.1 to 7.1 Upgrade Guide

This guide demonstrates the process of upgrading an Aura or TD-1050 screen from Android version 5.1 to Android version 7.1.

Whilst this process can be performed using a single USB drive, it is recommended that two separate USB drives are used for speed, convenience and to avoid the need for re-formatting.

You will need:

  • 2 x USB drives

  • Aura/TD-1050 v1.1.0 firmware upgrade file

  • Aura/TD-1050 v2.0.0 firmware image file

  • Record of individual screen URLs

Please contact helpdesk@qedas.com to request access to the upgrade files.

Preparing the USB drives

Insert the first USB drive into your computer.

Open Windows File Explorer and locate the USB drive.

Please note this process will wipe the USB drive of all stored files and data.

Right-click it and select Format…

A dialog window will open. Under the File system drop-down, select FAT32 and then click Start.

Once this process is complete, the USB drive will be formatted appropriately. Repeat this procedure for the remaining USB drive.

Now the required firmware files must be copied onto the root of each USB drive as indicated below:

USB Drive #1

blackwidow-lollipop-v1.1.0-2019_06_23-13_13_24-d.zip

USB Drive #2

TD-1050_7.1.1.img

Please do not unzip the firmware file as this will cause the upgrade procedure to fail.

Exiting the ResourceXpress application

When an Aura or TD-1050 screen first boots up it by default will launch the ResourceXpress Android client application. In order to check what version of firmware the device is currently running, you will need to exit the app. This is done in the following manner:

Step 1: Tap the four corners of the screen in a clockwise direction, starting from the top left.

Step 2: Enter the PIN code in the pop-up box and then click OK.

Step 3: Tap on the options button (displayed as three dots) at the top right of the screen, then select Quit.

Step 4: The secondary security screen will now appear. Enter the PIN code and select Unlock.

Step 5: Under Settings in the bottom right corner, check which FW Ver: is displayed.

If the firmware version shown is a lower version than v1.1.0, then proceed with USB drive #1.

If the firmware version shown is v1.1.0, then skip to using USB drive #2.

If the firmware version shown is v2.0.0, then no upgrade is necessary on this device.

Upgrading to v1.1.0 - USB drive #1

Step 1: Insert USB drive #1 into the device.

Step 2: Tap on Settings in the bottom right corner.

Step 3: Scroll down to Firmware update and select it.

Step 4: Tap on Firmware update.

Step 5: Tap on the START FIRMWARE UPDATE button at the bottom of the screen

Step 6: The device will then reboot. When it starts up again, an Android logo will be visible on the screen and the front LED will begin blinking red. Wait for the Installing system update… progress bar to complete.

Step 7: Once the screen turns back on it will return to the ResourceXpress application. Repeat the previous steps on Exiting the ResourceXpress application and then verify what firmware version is now displayed under Settings. It should now say FW Ver: RX7_v1.1.0.

Upgrading v1.1.0 to v2.0.0 - USB drive #2

Step 1: Insert USB drive #2 into the device.

Step 2: Tap on Settings in the bottom right corner.

Step 3: Scroll down to Firmware update and select it.

Step 4: Tap on Firmware update.

Step 5: Tap on the UPGRADE TO VERSION 7.1.1 button at the bottom of the screen

Step 6: The device will then reboot. When it starts up again, an Android logo will be visible on the screen and the front LED will show steady amber. Wait for the Installing system update… progress bar to complete.

Step 7: Once the screen turns back on it will return to the ResourceXpress application. Repeat the previous steps on Exiting the ResourceXpress application and then verify what firmware version is now displayed under Settings. It should now say FW Ver: RX12_U_v2.0.0.

Re-configuring the screen URL

As the upgrade from Android 5.1 to Android 7.1 restores the ResourceXpress client application to factory settings, this will now need to be re-entered.

Step 1: To return to the ResourceXpress application, press PLAY.

Step 2: A blue screen stating “Resource Information Unavailable” will now be displayed. Tap the four corners of the screen in a clockwise direction, starting from the top left.

Step 3: Enter the PIN code and press OK.

Step 4: Tap the options button (displayed as three dots) in the top right corner, then select Screen URL.

Step 5: Re-enter the ResourceXpress profile URL for this screen. The “server” text must be replaced by the ResourceXpress server FQDN or IP address, and the “.aspx” section must be instead changed to “.html” in order to accommodate the latest Astro stylesheet. Finally, the ID number must be changed to the relevant ID number for the meeting room screen you wish to be displayed. An example is shown in the screenshot below. Once this is done, click Save.

Additional considerations

As performing this upgrade procedure restores the device to factory settings, it is important to re-enter any additional custom configurations and settings.

One such consideration is the Remote firmware URL - without this set, it will not be possible for the screen to update remotely or check for updates.

Go to Settings → Firmware update → Remote firmware upgrade URL.

Enter the URL where the “upgrade.xml” file is stored and then tap SET.

Another consideration is the device Timezone. This should be set correctly to avoid any scheduled reboots occurring at unintended times.

Navigate to Date & time → Select time zone OR Settings → Date & time → Select time zone.

Scroll through the list and tap on the relevant timezone to select it.
